Guidelines for Effective Remote Healing Sessions

Darren Starwynn, OMD, LAc

This article is about a valuable skill you can develop that will elevate your abilities as a healer and makes good business sense, particularly during this time of sheltering in place and limited opening of our clinics. I have been conducting remote healing sessions for many years, and have introduced this practice to other practitioners. Many of them are finding it to be an extremely effective way to work during this time.

Energy in Action

Most of us in the field of acupuncture recognize we are working on the level of energy in order to help bring about therapeutic transformations in our patients. In his book The Web That Has No Weaver, Ted Kaptchuk describes qi as "energy on the verge of becoming matter, and matter on the verge of becoming energy." This is a useful description, as it describes qi as a bridge between energy and matter, and can remind us of Einstein's famous equation E =mc2: energy is equivalent to matter when its energy vibration is increased to the speed of light squared.

We are trained that the insertion of needles and other physical techniques is what moves and balances qi. That is true, but only part of the truth. Numerous experiments in quantum physics and other fields of science have proven that energy is affected and patterned by consciousness.

What is really exciting is that many of these experiments have demonstrated that what we think of as geographical distance is not a factor in the power of consciousness to affect energy. For example, a German researcher named Fritz Albert-Popp put two plants together so their electromagnetic fields were connected. He used sensitive meters to monitor the electromagnetic fields coming off both plants.

He then moved one of the plants many miles away from the other plant. When one of his assistants created a cut on the plant back in his laboratory, a form of injury, its electromagnetic field spiked, as if to register a form of pain. The other plant far away immediately showed the same spike on the meter as the one that had been injured. Numerous studies demonstrate this principle, which has been called quantum entanglement by some scientists.

The gene expression of the DNA molecules in our cells modifies and affects all the structures and functions of our bodies. The science of epigenetics has demonstrated that our gene expression is not just inherited from our parents. It is also constantly being affected by our environment, lifestyle, thoughts and feelings. In other words, all parts of our body and its energy fields are being constantly remodeled by our consciousness! We are what we think – in real time.

Experienced acupuncturists often also recognize it is the power of their intention that is creating just as much of the beneficial effects of their work as needle insertion, and that these work hand in hand.

Remote Healing: 10 Tips

So, we know that:

  • Beneficial changes in qi and electromagnetic energies are associated with health and well-being.
  • Energy is constantly moved and repatterned by thought, or consciousness.
  • The ability of consciousness to affect qi and electromagnetic energy is not limited by geographical distance.
  • Focused intention activates consciousness to move and transform energy.

These remarkable truths open up the ability for you to be able to offer highly effective remote healing / therapeutic sessions for clients. Here are some guidelines for remote healing sessions I use in my work:

1. Choose your communication method with remote healing clients. You can use phone calls, Skype, Zoom or other video conference systems.

2. Get clear on what healing methods you will offer through your remote sessions. There are many systems of energy healing, and you may already be familiar with some of them. You can offer forms of energy acupuncture, light or sound therapies including tuning forks, Reiki or other systems. (I use the system I call quantum healing, which works on the multiple dimensions of physical, mental / emotional and spiritual together.)

3. Always prepare for your remote sessions by creating a safe and sacred space of love and higher light around yourself and your client by invoking and visualizing it. Clear the energy field around you before each session. I call that a "purity blast." Intend that you are only working with energies of the highest good and purity in your session.

If you feel connected with spiritual sources of higher light and guidance, invoke and connect with that; or see yourself working within a vast, interconnected quantum field of light. The key is that when you are experiencing being grounded in this quantum field in your own body and nervous system, it is likely that you will draw your client into this more expanded sense of themselves, where true transformation is possible.

4. You can experiment with doing remote sessions using a doll or diagram of the human body as a surrogate to represent the client. When I first starting doing remote sessions, I got a large Barbie doll and put it on a treatment table; then used movements of my hands, energy tools and visualization to stimulate acupuncture points, chakras and the overall energy field I envisioned on and around the doll. More recently, I don't use a doll or table anymore, and find it just as effective to do it all within consciousness.  Find out what works for you.

5. Learn the art of voice dialogue. It is critically important to radiate confidence and loving presence. Take charge of the session right from the beginning by directing your client to join you in simple grounding, breathwork or intention-setting exercises. That way, you minimize the amount of time taken up in the session by the client reciting their repetitive "stories" about their pains and problems. Get them into more directly feeling the sensations of energy in their body behind those stories.

6. Develop your higher sense perceptions. We all have abilities to see and sense energy. Some people are more visual, some more kinesthetic; some just "know" what is needed beyond any senses. I have found that conducting remote healing sessions has helped powerfully awaken my intuitive and higher-sense perception abilities – even more than in-person sessions in my office.

This is similar to what often happens with people who lose their eyesight; they tend to develop stronger awareness through other senses, and sometimes clairvoyantly.

7. Once you have set up the session, go ahead and lead your client through your chosen methods. I find myself doing considerable work helping them identify key issues, locating where the issues are anchored in the body, and then using breath, guided visualizations, role playing and many specific interactions to help them release and transform old, stuck, fear-based energies. I have developed a system I call multi-dimensional clearing for identifying and clearing the deep root causes of people's complaints that are usually overlooked by most practitioners.

8. Take notes as you would for in-person sessions. It is often helpful to email the client a summary of what transpired during the session, along with "homework" they can do every day to continue their healing process: meditation methods, watching videos of guided practices, journaling and speaking intentional statements, etc.

9. Zoom and Skype both offer recording options. I usually send the client the recording of the session, or parts of it, that could be useful for continued practice.

10. Practice doing remote sessions first. Recruit your friends or colleagues as "patients" to "get the hang of it" before doing them with paying clients.

Awaken Your Own Healing Abilities and Better Help Your Patients

The wonderful thing about offering remote healing sessions is that as a practitioner, you will experience accelerated awakening of your own healing abilities, energy sensitivity and higher sense perceptions through doing it. In entering into offering remote sessions, the "journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step." Have the courage to dive in and take it for a test drive. Don't wait until you feel like you have it all together first. You will gain and develop your skills by actually doing it.
