In Memoriam: Dort Bigg III

By Editorial Staff

The acupuncture and Oriental medicine profession mourns the loss of Dort Bigg III, who passed away Oct. 29, 2019 at age 63. Dort served the AOM profession admirably over the years, including prominent positions with the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

The Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine, for which Dort was serving as executive director at the time of his passing, shared this tribute following the somber news:

After an extended executive position at the Accreditation Commission [for] Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), Mr. Dort Bigg came to work at the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine (ATOM) as the Executive Director since 2012. A pearl from the sand, he enjoyed working at ATOM and being part of our family, just as we loved the hardworking addition.

His contribution made the ancient wisdom more available to modern medicine. His persistent effort smoothly helped the school obtain accreditation and become well recognized in the field of medical education. His work also helped provide an easier path to natural health maintenance and longevity. He brought joy to many students and patients alike. The truth of his life will be reflected in the smile of his ancestors. Dort will be sincerely missed, and he will be long cherished in our sweet memories.

Dort is survived by his wife, Elena Otero Bigg; and son, Father Dort A. Bigg, the latter of whom has requested that donations in his father's name be made to one of the following: St. Crispin Friary, 420 E. 156th Street, The Bronx, NY 10455; The Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine, 100 E.
